ルールを破るためにルールを学べ: ルールを知らない人と、ルールを知っていて破っている人との違いを説明するのは難しい &#8212; でも、その人の作品を聴けば（もしくは見れば）わかるんだ。ルールをみんな破っていたにもかかわらず、彼の音楽にはどこもずれたところや無知なところがなかった &#8212; Mingusはルールを十分によく知っていたから、なぜルールを破らなければならないのか、理由を知っていたんだ。
